Princess Lily, the calico furball that has shared our lives for almost 15 years. We all know she is called by some the “cat from hell” but to her family~~~she’s simply Princess Lily, whom we have always loved dearly.
We have been pretty much off line for the last week because we almost lost her. It has been a very long, stressful and sad time for all of us, waiting to see if we could save her.
With Princess Lily, it has always been that when she needed to have something done at the vets office it usually meant she would have to have anesthesia. That poses a major problem for the vets and the vet technicians who are all very fearful of her.
I have always been allowed by our vet to stay with our furkids while they were being treated. I stay with them through dental procedures, surgery, recovery and any other procedure that would normally be performed without the owners present.
Our Princess Lily needed desperately to have mats removed and since grooming her is never possible taking her to the vet to have it done was our only option. I knew that this would mean anesthesia once again and that this time I would have them shave her and only leave her coat at about 1/2″ long. The vet tech that did her last year was also the one she had this time.
The procedure, as I am standing there is going as usual, I had them draw blood for her Wellness test and Thyroid test. These were normal last year. I was assisting the tech and watching the monitor to be sure that Princess Lily’s oxygen and heart rate were good. At times another tech would come and help with shaving her. The monitor was continuously falling off her little paw and we kept putting it back on. There were many times that it would just go to blinking lines resetting itself. At one point I told the vet tech that something was wrong it was reading 45 for oxygen and 105 for heart rate. She told me that that was because it was resetting itself and that they had had that one repaired more times than she could remember.
Finally the shaving is done~~~And Princess Lily~~~~isn’t waking up!!!!
Within minutes there are 3 vet technicians and the vet working on my Lily, whispering, shoving tubes down her little throat, whispering, changing monitors and finally shoving her back into her carrier. Explaining to me after that it was just taking her too long to wake up and that was probably due to her age. I am standing there with tears in my eyes, so scared and concerned that she won’t be alright, and feeling very thankful that I stay with my furchildren no matter what. The vet tells me that we will stay for a while just so that they can keep an eye on her. Twenty minutes later, Princess Lily is cleared to go home, but this~is only the beginning.
