~Spay/Neuter Clinics are a very valuable option for many pet parents today. With the rising cost of having spaying and neutering done, it is almost impossible for some pet owners to spay or neuter their pet. Most veterinary clinics won’t let people make payments on pet care. And most clinics have signs posted that services must be paid for on the date of service. Some offer “care credit” and almost all take credit cards. Even with that, many low income people cannot afford to have their pets spayed or neutered.
I am a huge advocate for spay/neuter of all pets that are not going to be responsibly bred. With so many animals in rescues and shelters and not having a loving forever home it is crucial to have this done. Many breeding’s are accidental while a huge number are people hoping to make a quick dollar by breeding their pets, without regard to how healthy they are or what kind of home those pets will end up in.
Today there are so many spay/neuter clinics offered by rescues, shelters and even mobile ones. These in many cases are a good thing but before using this option for your pets consider a few very important things.
- Who is doing the surgery.
- Will it be done in a sterile environment?
- Do they offer blood work before surgery?
- Will your pet have fluids after?
- Will your pet be sent home with pain medication?
- Where do you take your pet if there are complications after surgery?
- If at all possible, research the veterinarian doing the surgery.
